This batch starts in
Counting down to Wed 18 Nov 2026, 18:30. When it hits zero, this batch is in session.
French only,
from week two.
Claire's bet, and the reason this course exists: adults learn faster when the class runs in the language from the second session. Week one is pure survival kit — greetings, numbers, café French, and how to ask anyone to slow down.
From week two, English is reserved for the last five minutes. Everything else — the warm-ups, the pair work, even the jokes — happens in French, at A2 speed, with a teacher who has done this for eleven years and knows exactly which scaffolding beginners need.
Jess, one of last year's students, put it best: “I booked because the date was printed. Ten weeks later I held a ten-minute conversation with my host family in Lyon — in French, start to finish.”
How the
course runs
Same shape every week: teaching first, then practice with the teacher close by. Open a block to see what you will do — and what you leave with.
Greetings, names, numbers and café French — plus the survival phrases that make week two possible. Pronunciation is drilled from the first minute, in pairs.
You leave with: a café order placed entirely in French.
From here the class runs in French. Present-tense regular verbs through your real week: work, family, the dog, the bus that's always late.
You leave with: a spoken diary of your week, three minutes long.
Food, markets and restaurants: quantities, comparisons, and the vocabulary of appetite. Session five ends with a tasting — described, of course, in French.
You leave with: a market haggle and a three-course order, role-played clean.
The past tense for weekends and holidays, and the future for plans. Directions, delays and the small emergencies of travel, handled politely.
You leave with: a holiday story told and understood.
Films, music, family arguments about both. Opinions with reasons, and the connectors that make French sound like French.
You leave with: a five-minute opinion you can defend.
A full simulated A2 conversation with Claire: unscripted, recorded, and reviewed together over coffee. Certificates and the B1 route map to close.
You leave with: your recorded conversation and a written next-step plan.

Your teacher
claire-dubois
Claire grew up in Lyon and has taught French in Yorkshire for eleven years. She wrote Meridian's Speak from Week One course around a single bet: that adults learn faster when the class runs in French from the second session onwards.
It works because the first session is all survival kit — greetings, numbers, café French, and how to say “slower, please” with confidence. After that, English is for the last five minutes and the homework notes.

Good to know before session one
- Week one is the safety net: greetings, numbers, café French and how to ask anyone to slow down.
- English lives in the last five minutes — questions, homework notes, and the occasional confession.
- Homework is tiny: ten minutes of shadowing the week’s audio, most days.
- Film club is free while you’re on the course — first Sunday of the month, Room 1.
